Caring for Lead Crystal With proper care, a piece of crystal can be used everyday and can still last for generations. Part of its beauty is that it is meant to be enjoyed. Always wash your crystal by hand, using a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Avoid scrubbing or use of abrasives. To prevent chipping and scratching crystal when washing, remove rings, swing the faucet out of the way and line the bottom of the sink with a rubber mat. Rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Immediate drying eliminates water spots. To keep your crystal with that "new sparkle" forever, add a little vinegar to the water when hand washing. Water spots can also be removed by dipping a soft cloth in vinegar and rubbing lightly. Dust can be removed with a soft cloth. To clean closed vessels such as decanters or perfume bottles , simply fill the crystal with a solution of 50% water and 50% vinegar add uncooked rice and shake gently to clean the inside of the piece. Empty and rinse with warm water. Crystal should be stored in an upright position at room temperature. Avoid extreme heat or cold as rapid changes in temperature can cause the crystal to fracture or shatter. |
